Welcome to Rad10
Introduction to Rad10 - some basic information about using this site and what its aims are.
Welcome to Rad10. This site was because I had collected lots of bits of advice and experience through my involvment in various radio guises, and I thought it was about time I did something with it.
Hopefully you'll find something useful if you are interested in radio broadcasting both at presenter and management level.
I've long been a believer in the need to have non-professional radio run alongside commercial and BBC stations. Radio spectrum is a finite resource, and as such I don't want it to be given over purely to make profit for a few, although I think there is space on the dial for such stations. What I'd like to see is the commercial-brand stations complimented by small community broadcasting by volunteers who don't have the profit-margin as their ultimate goal.
This said, I cringe when I hear non-professional stations doing things a certain way purely because it's different to what is on offer. Commercial and BBC stations are, in the main, highly successful and I'll always argue that third-tier type stations have to learn from these people rather than rebel against them.
This site isn't designed to have the perfect answers; indeed it may be wrong on many issues. I would hate to think there would be a station that instigates my suggestions unquestionably. I am no expert, I'm just someone who has listened to others. If this site does nothing else, then let it let you question why you do what you do and even if you don't follow the advice, you may well change the way you do things.
Please let me have your feedback and comments. I am a radio obsessive, I love the medium, but I'm also passionate about spreading the word of good practice both in volunteer and radio management. I am always happy to chat about radio; throw ideas around - so whether you are looking for a formal training session or just someone to sit in the pub and discuss things with, then please get in touch.
Finally, this site is provided free of charge and that's the way I intend it to stay. The adverts at the bottom of each page offset the cost of hosting. Several people have asked if they can donate towards the site; and whilst I'm not looking for financial reward, if you feel you'd like to make a contribution then I'm always happy to receive something off my Amazon wishlist. (And yes, I am a bit of a Press Gang obsessive!).
Olly.
